May/June 2019 Newsletter

DEAR FRIENDS,

This is Nick, and I’m so excited to write to you this month, as Julie and I have wonderful news to share!

As many of you know, we are in the process of adopting from India. We are thrilled to announce that God has sent us a child! We were presented with a precious 13 month old girl and can’t wait for her to join our family! We’re not legally allowed to reveal her name until the adoption is finalized, but we can tell you that her middle name will be Journey. Hopefully, next time we are at your church, there will be another Akin child singing “Jesus Loves Me”; one who may have never heard His name otherwise.

Many of you reading this have supported us and prayed for us through this whole process and we cannot thank you enough. We still have many legal, medical, and financial challenges ahead. It will be six months to a year before we can travel to pick her up, but we are believing and trusting God and His timing.

Since we began this process over a year ago I have realized more and more how adoption is such an amazing picture of the Gospel. Just as I, a father, am pursuing this little girl in India, longing to be in a relationship with her, there is a Heavenly Father that pursues and longs to be in a relationship with us.

I am separated from my little girl right now because of the law (legal matters) and distance. What if I called the orphanage and asked to speak with her, and I were to say, “I will adopt you only if you pay the entire cost of this adoption and take care of all the legal matters perfectly. You will also need to purchase a plane ticket and take a 17 hour flight to Atlanta. From there, you’ll need an Uber to drive you to our home in Hampton. If you, a small child, can do all of this perfectly, I’ll adopt you into my family.”

Of course, I would never do that. I’m going to pay the price and go the entire distance to bring her home, not because of anything she has done to try and earn my love, but because I love her already.

Before I was adopted into God’s family, there was a separation because of sin... a distance between me, the orphan, and the Heavenly Father. (Rom 3:23) God knew that I could never fulfill the law on my own and get to Him, so He came to me! (Gal 4:4-6) He paid the ultimate price by sending Jesus to die for my sins so I could be adopted into His family! (Rom 5:8) (John 1:10-13)

Have you been adopted by the Heavenly Father or are you still an orphan separated from God? If the latter, the Father is pursuing you, even as you read this. You can’t pay the debt. He already paid it all! (Rom 4:4-5) You can’t earn His love. He already loves you! (John 3:16) Trust in Jesus to save you from sin, and remove the separation between you and the Father. Today, you can receive adoption into the family of God!

A NOTE FROM DAVID AND LAGENE

This is David, or Dad, as I’m most always called around here. My main prayer request for this newsletter is that my best friend, organization, right arm, and wife Lagene could be well again. We’re so thankful that she has finally gotten past her back surgery. Her nerve pain down her legs seems to be gone and we are so very thankful. Our prayer now is that her wounds and a case of the shingles that she seems to have acquired from the stress will heal and go away, and that God will give me my helpmate once again. I can honestly say that God has given me a new compassion for so many out there who have a sick or hurting spouse. It is a hard road to travel watching the person closest to us suffer in pain. Please know that I pray for you and know how you feel.

A NOTE FROM ELI AND WHITNEY

Life continues to be busy and a little chaotic chasing 3 children 5 and under! L.D. is already 6 months old! We love watching his sweet, content, easy-going personality develop. Evangeline and Beatrice stay busy with homeschool, playing together, and helping with their little brother. We are pursuing God’s will everyday for the best steps to take to make our ministry exactly what He wants it to be. Please continue to pray for us as we pursue this calling of ministry and as we parent and care for our children.

AN UPDATE ON DAVEY AND SARAH

Davey is still making good grades, working hard and making us proud. Sarah does a great job fulfilling her role as a mom and wife, and also helping out with the children’s choirs at First Baptist New Orleans. Lailey just turned 10, Maddox will be 8 in August, and Avonlea will be 4 in a couple of weeks. They continue to keep busy with singing, martial arts, ballet, and homeschool. Pray for them for health and that God will continue to supply all of their needs according to His riches in glory.

HOW YOU CAN PRAY FOR THE AKINS

Have you ever heard an Akins song, message, or testimony from our family over the years that has touched you, or maybe someone in your family has accepted Christ through our ministry? We have many prayer requests and needs as we continue trying to reach a world that is changing every day. One of the most important things you could do for us is to pray about becoming a monthly supporter of our ministry. It would help us to fight for the family like we’ve never fought before and allow us to go to churches that couldn’t normally afford us. The irony is that these churches, in many cases, are the very churches that need our ministry the most. Your support, no matter how large or small, would be such a blessing to our ministry and I know that God will bless every gift that you give in His name.

MONTHLY SUPPORT

It’s now easier than ever to make a one-time or monthly donation to our ministry. We appreciate each and every financial gift. If you feel led to become a monthly supporter we consider you a part of our family and ministry. Let us know you want to support us monthly with your first gift and as a token of our appreciation we will send you a copy of all of our current CDs and DVD as well as any that we release in the future.
